i thank You God for most this amazing
day:for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes
(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun’s birthday; this is the birth
day of life and of love and wings: and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)
how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any–lifted from the no
of all nothing–human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?
(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)
e.e. cummings
1894-1962
Commentary: I love this poem. The last two lines sound somewhat like a paraphrase of Pauline thought … but the whole poem makes me think about how e.e. cummings let all of his senses awaken to the natural world. All of us can be that awake.

thank you for your wonderful insight on this beautiful subject, it is truly and greatly appreciated i will live by your words forever more, i will sing to my children the songs of how spirit guidance 101 saved my life from great peril with his very important comment on i thank you god.
Cummings or cummings was a great contemplative as I read the question
“….how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any–lifted from the no
of all nothing–human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?”
Our spirits seem clearly known as “the no[s] of all nothing” as I now see it in view of students of Thomas Keating
🙂

Oh yes I agree definitely the words of an individual who has a contemplative practice and appreciates God in nature & communion with nature, as St.Francis or St.Clare did.. timeless…

This beautiful poem has been put on soul-stirring music by one of my favorite composers: Eric Whitacre. Absolutely stunning piece of choral music.

The choir I’m in sing a fantastic rendering of this poem. But I took the liberty of re-blogging this post because it makes me think that there must be a body of poetry out their that explores touch and the sensual in a way that the science does not grasp.
I’m at a Christian retreat on the mythopoetic men’s movement, and Joseph Campbell/Jungian/natural/Christian
archetypes. This poem springs back to mind for me, and it connects in so many ways with the same themes. Our question which leads toward Cummings-style gratitude and vision: “Where in my life is God inviting me to create joy?” –So thanks for posting the poem. It hits home today.
Mark, thank you for sharing this question, “Where in my life is God inviting me to create joy?” Powerful reminder to focus on this rather than the veils and illusions so heavy with worldly worries. Namaste.
[…] 4. Community is key. Most of Sue’s chapters are dedicated to someone–for Martha Smith Good (another pioneer in ministry who has also written a memoir, Breaking Ground: One Woman’s Journey into Pastoral Ministry), in memory of Marlin Miller (former seminary president), in memory of Mom, and of Dad and Cousin Richard, the Chestnut Street neighbours, and many others. The poet E.E. Cummings even gets a mention with his poem i thank you God most for this amazing. […]

[…] This is the person that I hope to communicate with: someone who is asking questions, and living the search for answers. I would also hope that my work will reach beyond the “seeker” and be read by those who think they know the answers already. “Pilgrim” is about that moment when all that has gone before seems to have reached a dead end. Something then happens: maybe a dream, maybe a circumstance – something that opens the eyes of your eyes, as e.e. cummings wrote. Here is his poem, from thepoetryplace […]

[…] Openness to God isn’t forced on any of us. But we can’t expect to listen, care or change for the better unless we’ve first experienced such openness to the work of God in our lives. What a glorious thing to be able to say, with e.e. cummings: “now the ears of my ears awake and now the eyes of my eyes are opened” (https://thepoetryplace.wordpress.com/2009/06/01/i-thank-you-god-for-most-this-amazing/). A beautiful poem. When I read it to myself, I always the envision the “yes” ending the last line of the first stanza as being emphasized, like an emphatic affirmation of all that is beautiful and good in the world.
